Start with a phrase you can hear and change
You do not need to name every note before making a melody. A useful first task is smaller: make a phrase that rises, pauses, and returns. A drawing canvas lets you place that contour directly rather than starting with notation or a piano keyboard.
DrawMusic maps your marks to notes in the chosen scale. Pentatonic uses five notes per octave, which reduces the number of pitch choices. This gives you a manageable starting point, but it does not guarantee that every drawing will sound the way you want. Your next decision comes from listening.
Try this three-phrase music drawing exercise
Open the canvas and choose Soft keys with the Pentatonic scale. Use Melody brush for a phrase with built-in rhythm and pauses. If there is already a drawing, download or share it before clearing it for this exercise.
- Draw a short, low horizontal line near the left side. Press Listen to hear where the phrase begins.
- Leave a gap, then draw a short line a little higher in the middle. Listen again: the second phrase should feel higher than the first.
- Leave another gap and draw a final line lower than the second. Listen to the whole loop and decide whether the return feels right.
Change one thing at a time
If the result feels too busy, shorten a phrase or leave more space. If the rise feels too large, switch to Notes and move the second phrase closer to the first. Drag a note’s right edge to change its length. These edits let you work on the sound while keeping the original drawn lines.
To hear another rhythmic treatment, open Options and choose Unhurried, Bouncy, or Offbeat for new lines. The setting applies to lines you draw next. Lower the BPM if you want more time to hear the phrase; choose 4 or 8 bars for the loop length.
Choose the sound after the shape works
Try Warm synth, Golden bell, or Space organ after you like the contour. A selected note receives the new sound on its own; with no note selected, the instrument change applies to the whole melody. This makes it easier to compare tone without redrawing the piece.
You can enable Gentle piano backing in Options to hear the melody with accompaniment that follows its key and tempo. Turn the backing off again to check whether you still like the melody on its own.
Keep a version before making another
Choose WAV to download the sound, or Finish & share to create a playable link. Drawing, listening, and sharing are free, along with three WAV downloads per day. MIDI requires Pro, and Pro checkout is not open yet.
For a second exercise, open a starter in the gallery and change just its ending. Comparing your version with the starter is a concrete way to hear what your edit did.
